Maria Taylor Quits ESPN after Rachel Nichols’ Leaked Phone Call: After a colleague made misleading statements, the popular studio presenter and reporter was generally expected to go. NBC may be her next stop.
She hosted the final of the N.B.A. ESPN on Tuesday. She was gone the following day.
ESPN said Maria Taylor, one of the most important talent in the network, left the business on Wednesday.
In an uncharacteristically lame news statement the ESPN Chairman, Jimmy Pitaro, claimed Taylor was “proud of the job that we have done together,” he added.
The resignation is predicted since the beginning of this month, when Rachel Nichols, one of her ESPN colleagues, revealed that the New York Times was making disappointing comments about Taylor. Nichols, who is a blank person, stated Taylor, who is Black, had taken the position of hosting the N.B.A. Finals instead of her because the leaders of ESPN felt “pressure” upon diversity in an interview with a LeBron James counsellor that Nichols was unaware was taped.
The comments made during the whole of the pro-basketball season a year ago festered within ESPN and exacerbated tensions among NBA personnel before bursting back in May. In reaction to a direction from ESPN leaders they thought Nichols would be benefitting on the opening day of the playoffs, Taylor and his colleagues Jalen Rose, Jay Williams and Adrian Wojnarowski contemplated skipping the programme.
A problematic N.B.A. final reserves for ESPN on Taylor’s exit. After the Times reported on Nichols’s statements, she apologised briefly; she was removed out of her responsibilities as a side-line reporter for the event one day before the finals began.
Some N.B.A. players on the social media were weighed in and N.B.A’s commissioner, Adam Silver, was unhappy by how the SPN had handled it, stating, “ESPN could have done so. Clearly not.”
Last Monday, Pitaro wrote a note to staff who pointed out that Taylor had been picked solely for the “NBA Countdown” finals to discuss problems of diversity and inclusion in a future town council meeting.
The predicament in Taylor’s contract drew over the finals. The arrangement was negotiated years ago to expire the two primary games she was involved in for ESPN during the off seasons of N.B.A. and college football. Because to the coronavirus, the NBA finals took place later than usual and binding ESPN.
On Tuesday the day that the Milwaukee Bucks finished in Game 6, Taylor’s contract expired. Taylor’s contract expired. Managers felt that if they had to replace Taylor in game 7, the issue would be uglier.
But it was possible to conclude an agreement for Taylor to remain at the finals, and until fairly late ESPN managers tried to re-sign the firm in a long-term contract.
There was no new destination for Taylor revealed, but two persons who knew about discussions were not permitted to talk publicly about the agreements with NBC are near to signing them. In NBC, when it is the network’s time to broadcast the Taylor may become the studio host of the N.F.L. Pregame show “Football Night in America” and the Super Bowl. The NBC would also offer the Olympics, tennis and horse races.
The departure of Taylor might cause a major adjustment to the N.B.A. coverage of ESPN.
At the least, a new host for “NBA Countdoow,” a pre-cam and halftime exhibition that has changed personnel throughout the years while TNT’s much-lauded “Inside the NBA” or even its own “College GameDay” fails to catch up. In the future, the business will have to pick. A new manufacturing organisation may also have to be developed: Just before the season started, at the end of the 2020 season, ESPN departed the senior producer, who run “NBA Countdown.”
ESPN must also determine if Nichols will be back as N.B.A. lead reporter next season for its job as the principal sideline reporter. Malika Andrews, who worked at The Times before, replaced her for the N.B.A. Finals.
The loss of Taylor leaves a gap for ESPN in several areas. She is also an analysis reporter for the National College Championships on “College GameDay.” He also covers the Women’s University Basketball Tournament and N.F.I. Draft.
