Lipa was born in London on 22 August 1995, to Kosovar Albanian parents who moved in 1992 from Pristina, FR Yugoslavia (present-day Kosovo[a]). Her father, Dukagjin Lipa, is a marketing manager and lead vocalist for the Kosovan rock band Oda, while her mother, Anesa Lipa (née Rexha), works in tourism.
Lipa is also of Bosnian origin through her maternal grandmother. Her family is Muslim. Lipa has Rina, a younger sister, and Gjin’s younger brother.
Until moving to Kosovo with her family in 2006, when her father accepted a job offer there, she attended Sylvia Young Theatre School part-time. In Kosovo, Lipa attended the Mileniumi I Tretë (Third Millennium) school in Pristina, and became a fan of hip hop artists that would subsequently shape her music style.
Lipa started sharing YouTube covers of her favorite songs by artists including Pink and Nelly Furtado at the age of 14. She said she was impacted by Justin Bieber’s exploration on YouTube, which motivated her to do the same.
One year later, hoping to become a singer, staying with a roommate and working at Parliament Hill School during the week and at Sylvia Young Theatre School on Saturdays, she moved back to London.
