Aaliya Haughton, the singer who died more than 20 years ago in a plane crash is suddenly trending on Twitter. More than 20 thousand people have tweeted about the singer already. So, what exactly happened that Aaliya is suddenly remembered on Twitter? Let’s find out.
The thing is, Aaliyah’s estate shares a statement on Instagram & Twitter protecting her legacy. The statement says, and I quote:
#ISTANDWITHAALIYAH: PROTECTING AALIYAH’S LEGACY IS, AND WILL ALWAYS BE, OUR FOCUS. FOR
20 YEARS WE HAVE BATTLED BEHIND THE SCENES, ENDURING SHADOWY
TACTICS OF DECEPTION WITH UNAUTHORIZED PROJECTS TARGETED TO
TARNISH. WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN CONFUSED AS TO WHY THERE IS SUCHA
TENACITY IN CAUSING MORE PAIN ALONGSIDE WHAT WE ALREADY HAVE TO
COPE WITH FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES. NOW, IN THIS 20TH YEAR, THIS
UNSCRUPULOUS ENDEAVOR TO RELEASE AALIYAH’S MUSIC WITHOUT ANY
TRANSPARENCY OR FULL ACCOUNTING TO THE ESTATE COMPELS OUR
HEARTS TO EXPRESS A WORD – FORGIVENESS.
ALTHOUGH WE WILL CONTINUE TO DEFEND OURSELVES AND HER LEGACY
LAWFULLY AND JUSTLY, WE WANT TO PREEMPT THE INEVITABLE ATTACKS
ON OUR CHARACTER BY ALL THE INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE EMERGED FROM
THE SHADOWS TO LEECH OFF OF AALIYAH’S LIFE’’S WORK. ULTIMATELY, WE
DESIRE CLOSURE AND A MODICUM OF PEACE SO WE CAN FACILITATE THE
GROWTH OF THE AALIYAH MEMORIAL FUND AND OTHER CREATIVE
PROJECTS THAT EMBODY AALIYAH’S TRUE ESSENCE, WHICH IS TO INSPIRE
STRENGTH AND POSITIVITY FOR PEOPLE OF ALL CREEDS, RACES AND
CULTURES AROUND THE WORLD.

Last night, the Estate of Aaliyah Haughton released a statement condemning individuals who are using unethical methods to distribute unlicensed projects linked with the late singer. The statement reaffirmed the estate’s dedication to safeguarding Aaliyah’s legacy, but cautioned fans that others would try to undermine their character as a group.
Although the statement doesn’t indicate who it’s directed at, it was posted shortly after Blackground Records began hinting at the possibility of Aaliyah’s songs being released on streaming sites. #AaliyahIsComing has been used to promote the website AaliyahIsComing.com on social media.

Uncle Barry Hankerson, Aaliyah’s co-founder, signed Aaliyah to Blackground Records in 1993. Hankerson has owned the singer’s masters since 2001, when the imprint was shut down.
However, because her estate does not control her catalogue, it has been difficult to make her songs more publicly available.
Early this year, Aaliyah released a message on her official Twitter account that said, “We hear and see you.” In spite of our wish to see Aaliyah’s songs published, we must admit that these issues are out of our hands and require time to complete.
Since Aaliyah’s death, we’ve struggled as much as you to share her songs and her talent with the world. Aaliyah’s music has been and will continue to be our first focus.”
A message to our fans. We hear you and we see you. Thank you for your continued support. – The Estate of Aaliyah#aaliyah #aaliyahhaughton #babygirl #aaliyahforever pic.twitter.com/fzFPf2CLLn

Who is/was Aaliya Haughton?
Aaliyah was the stage name of Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001). She was an American singer, actress, dancer, and model. “Princess of R&B” and “Queen of Urban Pop” have been dubbed after her.
Her second album, One in a Million, was produced by Timbaland and Missy Elliott. It sold three million copies in the United States and more than eight million copies worldwide, according to Nielsen Music. Romeo Must Die was Aaliyah’s debut film in 2000. On the film’s soundtrack, she sang “Try Again”.
Only airplay could propel Aaliyah to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts, making her history’s first artist to do it. She then starred in Queen of the Damned and released her self-titled third and last studio album in 2001, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Twenty-two-year-old Aaliyah her away in a plane crash in The Bahamas on August 25, 2001. All nine people on board were killed. It was later discovered that the pilot had cocaine and alcohol in his system, making him ineligible to operate the aircraft. Aaliyah’s family brought a wrongful death case against Blackhawk International Airways, which was resolved out of court.
A homebody much of her life, she enjoyed playing laser tag on occasion. Apparently, she enjoys “the basic things in life,” as she said. Aaliyah said during her farewell appearance on 106 & Park on August 21, 2001, that she had never bought a car since she resided in New York City and could rent a car or driver on a daily basis despite having a lucrative profession that allowed her to do so.
When Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number was released, rumours arose that Aaliyah and R. Kelly were dating, including the alleged accusation that they were secretly married. They were married on August 31, 1994 at Sheraton Gateway Suites in Rosemont, Illinois, according to a marriage certificate obtained by Vibe.
On the marriage certificate, Aaliyah was recorded as 18 years old, despite her age at the time. Her parents dissolved the unlawful marriage in February 1995. Couple denies being married and continues to refute any such claims.
