It won her the Brit Award for Song of the Year in 2019. She was also awarded the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2019, and ‘Electricity’ earned her the Grammy Award for Best Dance Album, a collaboration with Silk City.
The success of the singles helped her self-titled album become one of Spotify’s most-streamed albums and win platinum certificates. In March 2020, her second studio album, Future Nostalgia, was published to critical acclaim, winning six Grammy nominations for Lipa, including Album of the Year.

Lipa was born in London on 22 August 1995, to Kosovar Albanian parents who moved in 1992 from Pristina, FR Yugoslavia (present-day Kosovo[a]). Her father, Dukagjin Lipa, is a marketing manager and lead vocalist for the Kosovan rock band Oda, while her mother, Anesa Lipa (née Rexha), works in tourism.
Lipa is also of Bosnian origin through her maternal grandmother. Her family is Muslim. Lipa has Rina, a younger sister, and Gjin’s younger brother.
Until moving to Kosovo with her family in 2006, when her father accepted a job offer there, she attended Sylvia Young Theatre School part-time. In Kosovo, Lipa attended the Mileniumi I Tretë (Third Millennium) school in Pristina,[10] and became a fan of hip hop artists that would subsequently shape her music style.
Lipa started sharing YouTube covers of her favorite songs by artists including Pink and Nelly Furtado at the age of 14. She said she was impacted by Justin Bieber’s exploration on YouTube, which motivated her to do the same.
One year later, hoping to become a singer, staying with a roommate and working at Parliament Hill School during the week and at Sylvia Young Theatre School on Saturdays, she moved back to London. Lipa worked numerous jobs, such as hostessing restaurants and nightclubs, in order to raise money for music sessions.
